Andrea Harris asked: The idea of paragliding appeals to every individual. Humans have always aspired and dreamt of flying in the open sky. Although airplanes were made in an attempt to satisfy the thirst of flying, yet it cannot be as rejuvenating and refreshing as flying by your own. Paragliding is a wonderful experience and once you undertake this activity, you will surely come back for more.
A paraglider looks like a sports parachute and is even categorized as an extreme sport. However, paragliders are always inflated before the pilot leaves the ground as compared to other sports parachutes. Paragliding is a sport of flying parachutes; these parachutes are designed and modified in order to make them glide in air.
Just like any other sports, paragliding also has its own risks. The aviation side of paragliding is very important, when it comes to safety. All pilots are trained to operate their aircraft safely, by minimizing potential risks. In some cases it’s a matter of pure judgment such as during a loom and landing. Or it might mean sticking rigidly to a check list while preparing to leave the ground. The joy of flying, year after year after year, is the reward for doing it right.
The pilot or the person who drives the parachute sits in a harness position which is suspended with the help of strong harness belts. Modern harnesses are designed to be as comfortable as a lounge chair in the sitting position. Many harnesses even have an adjustable ‘lumbar support’. The pilot can operate lines individually to turn in air, increase or decrease speed of gliding, pitch, speed and steepness of glide.
Although paragliding is a very exciting and thrilling sport, one should always take precautions to avoid the possibility of any mishap. So, follow the above tips and have a safe and wonderful paragliding experience.

Bobby Handzhiev asked: The aircraft fuel prices go up like crazy. This is making flying an airplane a very expensive venture. Wouldn’t you be happy do discover a way to fly without buying fuel?
That is possible if you try flying an ultralight glider – an aircraft without engine. There are several types of gliders and in this article I’ll let you know about the most important and popular of them.
Ultralight Gliders
The gliders are airplanes which can fly without without engine and fuel. They look very much like normal airplanes and can have a closed or open cockpit and various kinds of wings.
A good glider will let you soar in the sky like a bird – for hours. And the only time you need power will be the time of taking off the ground.
There are two ways to take off the glider. With the most popular method you need another airplane which has engine. The glider and the airplane are connected with a rope. Once your glider get high enough to soar freely, the rope is released and you are free. The motorized airplane can land. Thus you have to pay only for few minutes powered fly. However, obviously there is another pilot engaged in this operation.
The other method is usually more cost effective. It’s called winch launching. Here you use a land locked engine which is connected thru a long rope to your glider. The which quickly picks up the glider and the pilot releases the rope when he is ready to fly on his own.
The glider prices are close to the prices of an ultralight airplane, but the glider’s usage is much cheaper, because you don’t need fuel. The only problem is that you must to to an airport which offers service for taking off gliders – either winch launching or thru another airplane who can take your off.
Hang Gliders
The hand gliders known also as deltaplanes are a lighter version of the gliders discussed above. They are constructed for one or two pilots and are attached directly to your body. You are freely soaring, there is no cockpit or anything like that.
The hang gliders are cheap and easy to use. You don’t need other airplane or a winch launching engine to take of. Instead of that you just need to go to a high place (for example the closest to you mountain) and run for few meters on your feet. Then jump, and here you are flying!
The hang glider will also let you fly for hours as long as there are appropriate weather conditions and wind. No special education or license is required.
A brand new hang glider can be bought for about $5,000, but you can find second hand much cheaper (under 2k).
Paragliders
If you think flying a hang glider is not easier enough, I’ll suggest you look at even simpler option. The Paragliders are lighter than the hang gliders/deltaplanes. Instead of having hard wing, their wing is soft and looks like a parachute. When you are done with your flying you can pick up your paraglider, put it in a large backpack and go home.
The hang glider wing needs storage place, while the paraglider can be put in your wardrobe.
The paragliders – just like hang gliders – don’t need anyone to take them off. You just need to go at a high place, run, jump and start flying.
The paragliders are probably the easiest and cheapest method for flying and sky diving. A brand new paraglider can cost about $3,000. An used one can be found for less than $1000. If you really want to fly but have not done that yet, I can only ask you what else are you waiting for.
Flying for fun is possible without engine, expensive aircraft or license. It is easy, cheap and ecological.

Max Cashman asked: Everybody dreams of being able to fly at some point in life, running across a grassy field and soaring over houses, streets and countryside. The wind in your face, cruising like a bird leaving all your worries and stress on the ground. It is no longer just a dream but a reality with the aid of a paraglider and paramotor.
Things have come a long way since the triangular Hang-gliders of the 1970s, the development of the Paraglider has made foot launched free flight an extremely popular sport today. The paraglider was first conceived in the late 1970s by parachutists foot launching Ram Air Chutes from the Alps in France, over the years these chutes have been modified and improved into a very Efficient wing giving the pilots performance more like a fixed wing glider.
Flights of over 200km are common just using thermals and the pilots skill to find lift and stay aloft for hours on end. Training in most countries will see you airborne, solo within a few days and it is possible to have a basic licence within a few weeks. The equipment is relatively cheap, a new glider, harness, reserve parachute, Boots, helmet and variometer will see you safely in the air for less than 4000USD! With many second-hand equipment available, less than 2000USD for an aircraft is not impossible!!
During the late 1980s motorised backpacks started to arrive on the paragliding scene and the name ?Paramotor? was soon adopted. These units gave paraglider pilots the opportunity to get in the air from a flat field rather than have to find a hill or mountain to start their flights. The also
gave these flyers the opportunity to stay airborne When all the thermals of the day had finished or even before they had started.
These units are very popular in Thailand, they development of paramotoring over the last 20 years has seen the Units get lighter, more powerful and less expensive each year. The training times are similar to paragliding and there Is a huge choice of new and used paramotors available. They can be easily dismantled, will fit in the boot (trunk) of a car and only require a small soccer field as a take off area. Prices range from 10,000USD for a full tandem outfit including Wing, reserve parachute, two seater trike and instruments to 1000USD for a used solo unit.
There are dangers involved in these sports, they are classed as extreme sports but with a sensible attitude Many pilots have enjoyed decades of safe flying up to 12,000 feet over some of the most beautifull countryside In the world. There are saftey courses available to deal with collapses from flying in turbulance and all pilots carry A reserve parachute. It is easy to enjoy this sport at your own pace, evening and early morning flights in smooth Air watching the sun rise (or fall) are a popular with some, whilst others enjoy the strong lift from midday thermals.
If you are interested in either of these sports why not nip down to any Sport flying club you can see paragliders and paramotors in abundance, chat to some experts and if you can even have a taster flight on a tandem paramotor.
A few other facts: If the motor fails you are still on a glider, no problem! A reserve parachute deployment is extremely rare World record distance on a Paraglider (No Paramotor) is 349Km

Dev Sri asked: A paraglider is the ultimate portable aircraft, entirely packing up into a rucksack when not in use! Originally based upon square ram-air parachuting canopies, modern paragliders have ample performance for soaring in the gentle lifting air on windward slopes, and in suitable conditions, thermal lift makes it possible to fly substantial distances across the country.
Paragliders have no rigid structure and are kept in shape by the internal pressure of air, with the pilot suspended by lines beneath. The pilot is clipped into a harness and oriented in a sitting position for maximum comfort. After laying out the wing and lines, launching is simply a matter of moving down the slope a few steps to tension the lines and allow the wind to inflate the wing and raise it above you. A short run forward to pick up airspeed and you’re airborne!
The paraglider pilot launches by ‘inflating’ the paraglider canopy over his head and then running down the slope of the hill, into the prevailing breeze, until the canopy lifts him away from the surface of the earth. Also like hang gliding, paragliding is unpowered flight, with none of the complications that otherwise arise from the use of an engine.
In the smooth, calm air of early morning or evening, a paraglider pilot can, with a few easy steps, launch himself from any convenient hillside or mountaintop and glide smoothly and silently to a gentle landing hundreds or even thousands of feet below. And even if this were the only experience offered by the sport of paragliding, it would well be worth it for those of us who have dreamed throughout our lifetime of imitating the simple, unencumbered flight of the birds.
But paragliding offers more or in the more active air of midday, a paraglider pilot with more advanced skills and experience can launch into soaring conditions, where rising parcels of sun heated air can carry paraglider and pilot aloft, sometimes thousands of feet above the point of launch, allowing the pilots to fly freely for several hours.
One of the greatest appeals of paragliding is the elegant simplicity of the sport; from the equipment required to the techniques involved. The paraglider wing itself is a mere 15 pounds of nylon or dacron cloth, fabricated into a series of ram air inflatable cells, to which is sewn an array of thin supporting lines which attach to the pilot’s harness. The entire system will fit in a corner of the trunk of your car, or onto a backpack that you can take with you on a hike.
Paragliding in Kerala
At Vagamon which is also known as the ‘Scotland of Asia’, with its rolling grass lands and with a history of the bygone British era with cool climate during most parts of the year conducts a paragliding festival. There are many tourist destinations in Kerala that provides paragliding training. Paragliding in India is highly popular at the tourist locations of Kerala. Kerala adventure paragliding is popular.
Reaching these places is very easy as all the modes of transport are easily available. The air, rail, and road transportation is well developed as many people from all over come for paragliding. Due to assume and easy travelling, more and more people have started paragliding at these popular regions in Kerala.
